GTA 6 Map Size: How Big Is Leonida Compared to GTA 5?
The short answer: GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida, built around a modern Vice City (its Miami). As of August 2026 Rockstar has finally given size comparisons: development head Rob Nelson says the map is twice the size of GTA 5’s and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s, with Vice City itself twice the size of Los Santos. What Rockstar still has not published is an area. No square miles, no square kilometers, no map. So the multiplier is now official and the acreage is not, which matters more than it sounds: two of Nelson’s own numbers do not reconcile with each other, and we walk through that below.
Quick labels used below:
- ✅ Confirmed by Rockstar (official site, trailers, or the June 2026 info drop).
- 🔬 Estimate by fans or analysts, clearly not official.
- 🟠 Rumor or leak, unverified.

What is Leonida, GTA 6’s map?
✅ GTA 6 takes place in Leonida, a fictional US state that stands in for Florida, with a few liberties taken along its northern edge. The centerpiece is Vice City, Rockstar’s Miami, last visited in the 2002 game and now rebuilt as a modern metropolis. Around it sits a full state: beaches, swamp, farmland, a faded port town, and a national park in the hills to the north.
Rockstar showed the map’s shape across Trailer 1, Trailer 2, and the June 24, 2026 info drop, and the official site groups the world into named regions and counties. Jason and Lucia’s starting apartment sits in the Leonida Keys, the island chain at the southern tip, which places the opening of the story at the bottom of the map.
What are the confirmed regions of Leonida?
✅ Rockstar’s map covers six named regions. Each one leans on a real slice of the Gulf Coast South.
| Region | Real-world inspiration | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Miami | The dense urban core. Rockstar’s map calls it the “sun and fun capital of America.” |
| Leonida Keys | The Florida Keys | A chain of tropical islands linked by long bridges. Jason and Lucia start here. |
| Grassrivers | The Everglades | Subtropical wetland of swamp, mangrove and slow rivers. Airboats, alligators, off-grid communities. |
| Port Gellhorn | Panama City area | A decaying west-coast port on what the map calls “Leonida’s forgotten coast.” Cheap motels and shut-down attractions. |
| Ambrosia | Florida sugar country | The agricultural and industrial heartland by Lake Leonida, built around a sugar refinery. |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | Southeastern uplands | Forest, canyon and off-road country along the northern border. Hunting, fishing, hiking. |
Region descriptions and taglines via GTABase and Beebom.
Two things stand out here that most summaries skip. First, Leonida is not only Florida. 🔬 Mount Kalaga’s canyons and elevation do not exist in the real state, so Rockstar reached north into the wider Southeast for that terrain (fans widely tie its look to Georgia’s Providence Canyon). Second, the six regions span wildly different biomes, which matters more for how the map plays than any raw size figure. More on that below.
A note on counties: the official map also splits Leonida into counties (Vice City sits in Vice-Dale County, for example). Some county names circulating online are read off the map by fans rather than spelled out by Rockstar, so the six regions above are the cleaner way to think about the world.
How big is the GTA 6 map compared to GTA 5?
Correction, September 1, 2026. From July until late August this guide said Rockstar had never published an official map size, and that every “twice as big” figure in circulation was therefore a fan estimate. That was accurate when written and is no longer true. Rockstar gave the comparison on the record on August 27, and the sections below have been rewritten around it. The correction is left visible rather than edited away, because the reason the old line was defensible is still the reason the new numbers need reading carefully.
✅ What Rockstar has now said. Rob Nelson, head of development at Rockstar North, gave YouTuber TGG a set of figures during the late-August preview visits to the Edinburgh studio. As Kotaku carried it:
The map is twice the size of GTA 5’s map, three times the size of Red Dead 2’s map. Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos. And Vice City and its surrounding suburbs is 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings.
VGC reported the same figures. Four numbers, one quote, and the coverage has been garbling two of them.
The 11x is not Vice City against Los Santos. Read the sentence and the comparison is Vice City plus its surrounding suburbs against Los Santos plus its surroundings. Vice City against Los Santos is the 2x, in the previous sentence. Anyone telling you Rockstar said Vice City is eleven times bigger than Los Santos has merged two separate claims from one quote.
The 2x and the 3x do not reconcile. This is the part nobody has flagged, and it is simple arithmetic on Rockstar’s own words. If GTA 6 is twice GTA 5 and also three times Red Dead Redemption 2, then RDR2 must be about two-thirds the size of GTA 5. Every community measurement says the opposite: RDR2 is usually put at around 29 square miles of explorable land against GTA 5’s roughly 21, which makes RDR2 the larger of the two by about 40 percent. Nelson’s two ratios are out by roughly a factor of two against each other.
That does not mean anybody is lying. It means the two comparisons are almost certainly not measured on the same basis (total map including water versus playable land is the obvious candidate, and RDR2 has large regions that are locked or unreachable in the story), and that these were conversational figures given in an interview rather than numbers read off a document. Which is the useful conclusion: treat them as Rockstar describing a scale, not as Rockstar publishing a specification.
What the confirmation does settle. The fan estimates can now be graded, and the result is not what the loudest coverage would predict.
| Fan estimate (pre-August) | How it was reached | Multiple vs GTA 5 | Against Nelson’s 2x |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coordinate scaling (anli2132) | Landmarks and coordinates from trailers; high end counts the northern panhandle | 2.4x to 2.7x | Overshot. The most-cited number was the least accurate. |
| Alternative frame analysis | Different scaling of the same footage | ~2.16x | Close, slightly high. |
| Conservative screenshot reads | Aggregated still-image analysis | 1.5x to 2x | The quiet estimate landed on it. |
| Absolute area reconstruction | Full fan-drawn map, roughly 125 sq km (about 60 sq mi) | Depends on the GTA 5 baseline used | Untestable, since Rockstar gave no area. |
Sources: GrandTheft.gg, Beebom.
What the confirmation does not settle: the denominator. “Twice GTA 5” only converts into square miles if you know how big GTA 5 is, and that number has never been agreed either. GTA 5’s map gets quoted anywhere from about 19 square miles of land to roughly 30 square miles including water, and casual comparisons often reach for a 49-square-mile figure that counts the open ocean you can boat and fly across. Doubling those gives a GTA 6 anywhere from 38 to 98 square miles. Rockstar has published no map of Leonida and no area, so every full map and square-mileage figure you can find is still a fan reconstruction. The multiplier moved from estimate to official. The acreage did not move at all.
Why does map size matter less than you think?
Raw area is the wrong thing to fixate on, and GTA’s own history shows why. A big empty map is a chore. What made GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 feel large was density: things to find per mile, not miles alone.
Leonida is built for that. 🔬 The six regions pack a city, an island chain, a swamp, farmland, a dead-end port town and mountain wilderness into one continuous world, which is far more biome variety than GTA 5’s single-city-plus-countryside layout.
✅ Rockstar has now put a number on the density side, and it is the more useful figure of the two. Aaron Garbut, co-head of Rockstar North, told the New York Times that GTA 6 carries more than 600,000 NPC animations, against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5 and about 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2, with a dedicated Los Angeles team working only on NPCs. Set that beside the 2x map figure and the shape of the project is clear: Rockstar roughly doubled the ground and multiplied the behavior on it by about eleven.
Two older density claims still get repeated and both need labels. 🟠 A widely shared leak says GTA 6 has “700+ enterable interiors,” which would be a big jump over past GTA games, but that number comes from leaks rather than Rockstar. 🔬 Separately, a fan counted more than 14,000 individual trees in a single trailer frame as a rough gauge. Treat both as directional.
If a bigger, busier world makes you nervous about performance, that instinct was correct. ✅ Rockstar confirmed in August that GTA 6 is targeting 30fps on every console, and the 600,000 animations are a large part of why. Map ambition and frame rate pull against each other, and Rockstar has chosen ambition.
Where do Jason and Lucia start on the map?
✅ Trailer 2 placed Jason and Lucia’s starting apartment in the Leonida Keys, the island chain along the southern edge of the state. That puts the start of the story at the bottom of the map, with Vice City and the mainland spreading north from there. It mirrors how past Rockstar games ease you in from a quieter corner before opening up the full world. For who these two are and how the dual-protagonist setup works, see our Jason and Lucia guide.
What is still unconfirmed about the map?
- 🟠 Area in square miles: the ratios are official, the acreage is not, as covered above. Rockstar has published no map of Leonida and no measurement.
- 🟠 A Georgia-style area (“Gloriana”): plates and set dressing point at territory beyond the six named regions. Our Gloriana guide grades the evidence; it remains off the map Rockstar has shown.
- 🟠 How much opens at launch: whether the whole state is explorable from the start or paced out by the game’s chapter structure is not spelled out.
- 🔬 Interior count and full landmark list: shown in pieces, never totaled officially.
- 🟠 Dynamic weather that reshapes the map: retail-listing leaks describe storms and flooding that change traversal. Plausible, unverified.
We move any of these to Confirmed the moment Rockstar says so, on the Everything We Know hub.
The bottom line
Leonida is a full US state built around a modern Vice City, spanning six very different regions from the Keys to a mountain park. Rockstar has now said the map is twice the size of GTA 5’s, three times Red Dead Redemption 2’s, with Vice City twice Los Santos and Vice City plus suburbs eleven times Los Santos plus its surroundings. Take the 2x as the headline number, because it is the one that squares with the careful fan measurements and with the game Rockstar has shown. Hold the 3x loosely, since it cannot be true on the same basis as the 2x. And keep ignoring square-mileage figures, because Rockstar has still published none, and doubling a disputed GTA 5 number does not produce a confirmed GTA 6 one.
We update this guide when Rockstar confirms new map details. Updated September 1, 2026 with Rob Nelson’s official size comparisons, the arithmetic problem inside them, and Rockstar’s 600,000 NPC animation figure. Live map facts also sit on the Everything We Know hub.
Frequently asked questions
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Rockstar has given ratios, not an area. Rob Nelson said the map is twice the size of GTA 5's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, with Vice City itself twice the size of Los Santos. No square-mile figure exists, so any area you see is still a fan estimate.
Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 5?
Yes, and Rockstar has now said by how much. Rob Nelson put it at twice the size of GTA 5's map at an August 2026 preview event. That lands inside the range fan measurements had produced, and below the 2.4x to 2.7x figure that circulated most widely.
What are the confirmed regions in GTA 6?
Rockstar's map covers six named regions of the state of Leonida: Vice City (its Miami), the Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers wetlands, the port town of Port Gellhorn, the agricultural region of Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park in the mountainous north.
Where do Jason and Lucia start in GTA 6?
Trailer 2 showed Jason and Lucia's starting apartment in the Leonida Keys, the island chain along the map's southern edge modeled on the Florida Keys. That places the opening of the story at the bottom of the map, with Vice City and the mainland spreading north from there.
Has Rockstar confirmed how big the GTA 6 map is?
Partly. Rockstar has confirmed comparisons but never an area. Rob Nelson gave three ratios in late August 2026, and no Rockstar source has published a square-mile or square-kilometer figure. Converting a ratio into an area means multiplying by a fan estimate of GTA 5's size, which is where the disagreement lives.
